Dr. Rebecca Gimenez of TLAER, Inc. is the United States distributor for "Rescue Randy" Horse Mannequin.  She is thrilled to announce that both the Milton Fire Department in Georgia (Read the Story) and the University of Florida VETS team have recently purchased this mannequin.  Dr. Gimenez is looking forward to utilizing "Rescue Randy" in future TLAER, Inc. Training Courses in addition to the live TLAER Demonstration Animals.

ResQuip Limited designs, develops, and builds life-sized (15.2 Hands), fully articulated, horse mannequins used for rescue training.  The manufacturer has sold these training aids across the United Kingdom and have now extended their activities to include mainland Europe and the United States.  The "Randy" rescue horse mannequin weighs approximately 450 lbs. plus the weight of the floor stand.  It is possible to increase the weight if required but the general consensus is that 450 lbs. is about right; if it were heavier it would be difficult to place it into some rescue scenarios and it could present problems when training a small group.

The floor stand is on castor wheels that are included in the price. "Randy" is constructed around an articulated steel skeleton that provides free-standing strength while allowing full movement of the head, neck, and limbs.  This is the only horse  mannequin available that can stand in a fully upright position by locking the jointed extremities in place.  It can be lifted off the frame and stands on its hooves, provided that the ground is not too uneven, and can be used in this manner when being stood up in mud or water.  By removing the locking pins and flexing the legs, “Randy” can be used in a recumbent position for practice on a Rescue Glide, which prevents having to use sedation in demonstration animals (especially when training is under a IACUC Protocol.)  The possibilities are endless... and this product has a long working life that can’t be matched elsewhere.  The manufacturers use a spring steel strip inside the neck (instead of the original box section stiffener) as this allows for a degree of sideways head and neck movement. This enables the head to be raised when the horse is on its side (comfort/head protection) and enables more realistic positioning of the horse prior to the extrication exercise.  The intense engineering that went into developing “Randy” has made it a versatile piece of training equipment that can be used in a wide variety of training scenarios. Examples include TLAER AWARENESS LEVEL training where legal concerns preclude the use of live animals for TLAER training; or TLAER OPERATIONS LEVEL trainings where “Randy” can be placed in scenarios that are far too dangerous for live demonstration horses (inside a trailer to be overturned, hoisted up a steep ravine, extricated from a muddy cold riverbank, removed from a collapsed structure, etc.)

The preferred color is white for a number of reasons. The light color minimizes heat build-up if the horse is left out in the sun and the precise position of slings etc. can clearly be seen against a white background.  The contrast in colors make its appearance most impressive when it has just been hauled out of a mud hole!

The price includes the wheeled floor stand, all necessary tools, a set of spare fixings and a pair of "aggressive" (pinned-back) ears that can be used to replace the original, and removable, "attentive" (upright) ears. The horse is delivered either boxed, or standing on the frame and with all legs fully locked.
